Tips for Maintaining Your Wooden Fence

A wooden fence enhances your home's beauty and provides privacy, but it requires consistent maintenance to stay looking great and structurally sound. Here's how to keep your fence in top shape for years to come.

1. Regular Cleaning

Every spring, give your fence a thorough cleaning:

  • Wash with water and a mild detergent to remove dirt and mould
  • Use a soft brush for hard-to-reach areas and stubborn spots
  • A gentle power wash (low pressure) can speed up the process
  • Allow the fence to dry completely before applying any treatments

2. Painting and Protection

Reapply stain or paint every 2–3 years to protect the wood:

  • Stain or paint shields wood from moisture and UV damage
  • Maintains the fence's colour and appearance
  • Extends the wood's lifespan significantly

Important note: If you have pressure-treated wood, wait several months after installation before applying stain or paint. The wood needs time to dry out. Applying protective coatings to insufficiently dry wood can trap moisture inside, which accelerates rot and decay. While pressure-treated lumber resists fungal damage and termites, it remains vulnerable to swelling, shrinking, cracking, and warping without proper surface protection.

3. Damage Inspection

Conduct an annual inspection to catch problems early:

  • Replace damaged boards before rot spreads to adjacent sections
  • Secure loose fasteners — tighten screws and replace missing nails
  • Check fence section connections — ensure panels are properly attached
  • Inspect post stability — look for leaning or soft, rotting bases
  • Examine gate hardware — check hinges, latches, and locks
  • Lubricate moving parts — apply lubricant to gate hinges and hardware

4. Plant Control

Keep vegetation away from your fence:

  • Anything your fence touches can allow extra moisture into the wood
  • Trim back shrubs, vines, and tree branches that contact the fence
  • Ensure garden sprinklers don't spray directly on the fence
  • Direct irrigation spray accelerates finish deterioration and wood decay
  • Maintain a small gap between garden beds and fence posts

Regular maintenance is the key to a long-lasting fence. A little effort each season prevents costly repairs and keeps your property looking its best.
