Most people want a front yard that looks good — not a front yard that becomes a second job. The good news: low-maintenance does not mean boring. It means making smart choices once, so you do less work every weekend after. Here are seven ideas that work well in Ontario's climate.

1. Shrink the Lawn

Grass is the most demanding thing in your yard. Replace part of it with mulched planting beds or ground cover, and you cut your mowing, watering, and fertilizing time immediately.

2. Choose Native and Hardy Plants

Plants that naturally grow in Ontario — coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, ornamental grasses, junipers — survive our winters and dry summers without constant care. Exotic plants look exciting at the garden centre and exhausted by August.

3. Mulch Everything

A 5–8 cm layer of mulch keeps moisture in the soil, blocks most weeds, and makes every bed look finished. Refresh it once a year and your beds stay clean with almost no weeding.

4. Install Proper Edging

A stone or steel edge between lawn and beds keeps grass from creeping in and gives the whole yard a sharp, professional line. It is a one-time job that saves hours of trimming every month.

5. Plant in Groups, Not Rows

Three or five of the same plant together look intentional and fill space fast. Single plants scattered around look random and leave gaps where weeds move in.

6. Use Shrubs as the Backbone

Evergreen shrubs like boxwood give your yard structure in all four seasons — including winter, when flowers are gone. Plant them once, trim them once or twice a year, and forget them.

7. Automate the Watering

A simple drip line on a timer waters your beds better than a hose ever will, and it works while you are at the cottage.
